History of Chhath Puja (in short): ☀️
Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya. Its exact origin is unknown, but it is rooted in ancient Sun worship, agriculture, and respect for nature.
- Bihar: The festival's major cultural heartland.
- Mithila (Maithili tradition): Known for folk songs, fasting, and family traditions.
- Magadh (Magahi tradition): Associated with ancient Sun worship and historic Sun temples, such as Deo Sun Temple.
- Bhojpur (Bhojpuri tradition): Known for devotional folk songs and community celebrations.
According to the Rigveda, ancient sages composed hymns praising Surya (the Sun), Ushas (the dawn goddess), and Aryaman (a Vedic deity associated with social bonds and hospitality). These deities were honoured through prayers, hymns, and offerings as part of Vedic religious tradition.
The first Sun temple was built to worship Surya Dev, seek blessings for health and prosperity, and express gratitude to the Sun as the source of life and energy. The exact location and date of the first Sun temple are not known with certainty.
